Incorporating Uncertain Site Information into Groundwater Modeling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Proper site characterization is vital for cost effective design of a remediation system. Scarcity of data, spatially and temporally varying site conditions and cost associated with sampling, lead to decisions being made under uncertainty which may be categorized as stochastic, lexical or informal. Probability theory, developed for stochastic uncertainties, is not suitable for representing lexical and informal uncertainties. In this paper, a methodology is developed to represent different types of uncertain information and propagate the uncertainties through a groundwater flow model. The methodology includes using probability theory to represent random uncertainties and possibility theory for nonrandom uncertainties . A probability-possibility transformation is used to convert the probability density function to possibility distribution. Alpha cuts are used to convert the governing PDE to one with interval parameters and sparse grid interpolation is used to reduce the computational efforts.

On the Use of Information Theory to Quantify Parameter Uncertainty in Groundwater Modeling
We applied information theory to quantify parameter uncertainty in a groundwater flow model. A number of parameters in groundwater modeling are often used with lack of knowledge of site conditions due to heterogeneity of hydrogeologic properties and limited access to complex geologic structures. The present Information Theory-based (ITb) approach is to adopt entropy as a measure of uncertainty ...
متن کاملMaximum likelihood Bayesian model averaging and its predictive analysis for groundwater reactive transport models
While Bayesian model averaging (BMA) has been widely used in groundwater modeling, it is infrequently applied to groundwater reactive transport modeling because of multiple sources of uncertainty in the coupled hydrogeochemical processes and because of the long execution time of each model run. To resolve these problems, this study analyzed different levels of uncertainty in a hierarchical way,...
متن کاملSite Selection for Groundwater Artificial Recharge in Silakhor Rangelands Using GIS Technique
Groundwater is among the most important resources of drinking water supply ofthe worldwide population. Use of recharge area is one of the methods for artificiallyrecharging groundwater. Selection of suitable sites for artificial recharge is very importantand must be carried out accurately. There are different types of land use, only rangelandsare appropriate for artificial recharge because of t...
متن کاملStochastic Finite Fault Modeling for the 16 September 1978 Tabas, Iran, Earthquake
The main objective of this study is estimating acceleration time history of 16 September 1978 Tabas earthquake incorporating the seismological/geological source-path and site model parameters by using finite-fault simulation approach. The method generalizes the stochastic ground-motion simulation technique, developed for point sources, to the case of finite faults. It subdivides the fault plane...

In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...
